The Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre inhereted Vase with Two Handles from the Fok Ying Tung Foundation. As documented by the Cultural Centre museum, this ceramic vase was found in Hunan province in China and is classified as "swatow ware". As noted by gotheberg.com, swatow ware is a specialized Chinese ceramic "characterized by sand adhering to the bottom of individual pieces and are usually associated with over-glaze enamel decoration". Swatow ware is noted for depicting chrysanthemums or aster flowers, as seen in relief on the Vase with Two Handles.
Vase with Two Handles is an elegantly vase, consisting of intricately sculputed trellis-work and floral reliefs. Chrysanthemums have a long historical significance within Chinese culture, hosting an array of symbolic meanings. For over 3,000 years, chrysanthemums have eluded to the season of autumn, intellectual accomplishments and abundance. Their rich yellow and gold petals correspond with the sun and are said to revitalizing and promote well-being. The chrysanthemum is one of the Four Gentlemen in Chinese culture, representing one the four seasons.
